A Prairie Home Cruise: Sydney Excursions

A Cape Breton Mine Experience
DURATION: Approximately 4 hours
PRICE: $59 Adult $39 Child

Learn about the hard life of a miner on this unique interactive tour of the Cape Breton Miners Museum. A 30-minute motorcoach trip brings you to the museum. You'll tour the Ocean Deeps Colliery, an actual underground coal mine located beneath the building; retired coal miners guide you on this 30-minute excursion into the 1932 mine, where you experience first-hand what it was like to extract coal by the "sweat of your brow." Your tour will focus on the geological development of the Sydney coal fields and the various techniques which have been used to mine these coal seams since 1720. Returning to the surface, take a simulated trip into Phalen Colliery—a modern-day mine. During this 15-minute video presentation, you'll be seated in a colliery car known as a "rake," and, with special effects, you'll "travel" underground into a present-day coal mine. After, explore the Miner's Village, complete with a company store. Your last stop will be at the Old Town Hall in Glace Bay, built in 1902 and restored as a Historical Monument to the Mining community of Glace Bay. Light refreshments will be served.

NOTES: Underground mine tour has a low ceiling and requires some bending.
