Mosaics at Ravenna's Basilica of San Vitale
The city's 5th and 6th Century churches are plain on the outside but known for the intricate mosaics inside, which sometimes incorporate gold leaf decoration.
The author Dante Alighieri lived in Ravenna after his exile from Florence until his death in 1321.
