Our next Prairie Home cruise will be a two-week odyssey aboard the ms Maasdam out of Seattle and along the coast with some special stops in Sitka and Kodiak, an overnight in Anchorage to permit you to go visit Denali, and the chance to visit many sights that were out of reach in 2006. The first day takes us past old-growth cedar and spruce rain forest along the coast. We’ll sail into the Tracy Arm Fjord and look out for newly calved icebergs from the South Sawyer Glacier. In Juneau, a plenitude of good fish restaurants and small boats to take you out whale-watching. The world’s busiest seaplane base is Lake Hood in Anchorage, where intrepid bush pilots wait to ferry you out to the trackless wilderness. On Kodiak Island, you can go bear-watching and see onion-domed churches from the Russian colonial era. Sitka is a tossed salad of ethnicities — Russian, Tlingit, Aleut, Finnish, Ukrainian. We’ll sail back along the coast to Victoria, the scenic capital of British Columbia, and then back to Puget Sound and Seattle.
A Prairie Home Companion Cruise is produced by Prairie Home Productions and presented by American Public Media. Ship’s registry: The Netherlands.
