First Person
The Bench
by Cindy Prince
May 2, 2007

Lined up like soldiers
Eager faces close together
Elbowing one another
For more space
On the brown wooden bench

The smells of Mom's pancakes
Covered in chunks of butter
And hot homemade syrup
We lick our lips
As we wait on the bench

Finally, one big pancake
Lands on each plate
Then disapears in a flash
As we wait for another
Side by side on Dad's bench

About the author:
I was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and was one of 7 children. My Dad had made that bench to hold as many of us as was possible. My 4 kids have had the same experience, waiting for my pancakes, on that 50 year old bench. I now live in Jasper, Arkansas (population 498) with my husband and 4 children where I write, paint, and work at a library.
