First Person
Telegraph Avenue
by Owen Mould
August 8, 2007

All along Telegraph Avenue clots break
Up, dissolve, cluster in jabbers around a steak
Burrito, a guy dashing a guitar —
Friends plan to meet at the 5th Amendment Bar.
All night Highland throbs, a battered heart,
And off Hillmont another artery starts.
On Perkins Street I once lived with a girl,
Who led me half-way around the world,

And left me there to flatline, a burned out star,
But I came pounding back to live by the lake
In the holy city of Oakland, older and far
From being in any way wise or great:

These streets, this town, becoming everywhere
Home with each word. Look! There is there!
