Belly Dancing on the Broadkill River by Karla Pahel August 22, 2007 The range of motion gets bigger in the second chakra where the color is deep reds and oranges Hip scarves are jingling over this, our base, our hips, our reproductive organs, our center of creativity. The teenage boys are casting their lines moving into this sacra center pelvic tucking and pulling in out through the long windows, where the boys are fishing off the bridge pulling in, below my naval, figure eights we swim, dive under, to the roots here, to this river, this small town, once a ship building town, filled with opaque shells of mermaids' toenails where we are learning not cabaret, but rather tribal styles. About the author: I am a Delmarva writer and member of The Rehobeth Beach Writers Guild. I have attended Tin House's Summer Writers Workshop'06 at Reed College. My poetry has won third place at The Rehobeth Beach Seaglass Contest'07. I was also a Breadloaf Fellowship finalist'07. I have founded Elizabeth Minshull's Literary Teas, a floating literary teahouse located at Warrington Manor Lavender Farm as well as Hull Cottage Bed & Breakfast. Currently, I live in Milton, DE with my two children, Jonah and Aidan and boyfriend Michael Chamberland. |
