First Person
It Is Now
By Cindy Prince
November 13, 2007

It is now, but
Hazy, softly out of focus memories
Thanksgiving Day
Home cooked meal
Lying belly first across swing
Waiting...
Heavenly smells emerge from kitchen.
Mom fretting,
"Bert's on her way, Vonnie's, Mother and Daddy too."
Past noon now. When will we eat?
Then all are here.
Dad says grace.
Who will get the legs?
Kay yells, "Hey Gay, wanna break the wishbone?"
Just the carcass left.
As Granny asks, "Ginnie do you think the dressing was too sagey?"
Sister-talk over coffee
"Hush now kids. Leave us be."
It is now
So many gone on
Another generation--
My own family
Memories in the making.

About the author:
I have such great memories of Thanksgiving and family. This will be the first Thanksgiving without Mom and it will be tough. I live in the small town of Jasper with my family where the owner of The Ozark Cafe feeds anyone a huge Thankgiving meal for free.
