Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

On November 4, we installed a new priest (Rev. Sheila McJilton) at our church (St Philip's Episcopal Church in Laurel, MD)
By 4 PM the place was packed. The procession was lined up in the back of our little church. Banner-bearer, two crucifers, two acolytes, choir, ministers of the chalice, guest preacher, new priest, and The Bishop. The organist was waiting for the signal. What was holding things up?
Suddenly, in the hushed sanctuary: BEEP BEEP BEEP. Pause. BEEP BEEP BEEP. Pause. BEEP BEEP BEEP. Pause. What the HELL was that?
In lighting the incense (not something we usually do), they had set off the smoke alarm. Laughter rippled through the congregation as a frantic usher appeared from the adjoining room and rushed to the back of the church to find someone—anyone—who knew the password that would keep the fire trucks at bay.
The word was passed.
The alarm was silenced.
The organist launched into "ALL MY HOPE ON GOD IS FOUNDED" and the celebration of our new life together began.

I have been married to the same man for 45 years. My mom, age 98, has lived with us for 8. My husband says sometimes it seems like its been longer. We have 2 daughters, one grandson, another on the way. We share a beagle and a cat with Mom.
