First Person
A Norwegian's Xmas Eve
By Gail Smogard
December 4, 2007

To be sung to the tune of "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" while the cousins (happily) clean up after the aunts and uncles and everyone else.

Dishes clink!
In da kitchen,
In da sink,
Soap suds glisten,
Ve're doing what's right, Ve?re vorking tonight,
Vashing? in a vinter vonderland.

Gone avay,
Ist da turkey,
And da plates-
Sure look murky,
Potato peels float, like small Viking boats,
Vashing in a vinter vonderland.

In de lifing room ve hear de odders,
Laughing dere and hafing so much fun!
Dey know dat ve're out here in da kitchen
So de're acting like dey tink ve?re almost done.

True da steam,
Ve perspire,
And da plates,
Yust climb higher,
Da sink is a mess and so is my dress
Ve're under da gun, so Santa can come
Ve face unafraid, da mess dat ve've made,
Vashin in a vinter vonderland.

About the author:
This rendition of the carol is our little tribute to our large family of uncles and aunts who gather with all of us each Xmas and who still retain the accent of their first language.
