I awake each morn
in the old wood frame
dark oak door
front wooden
windows cracked
open
for the bravado
of the wax-wings

a bouquet of garlic freshly
mowed
springs from the ground
a stray cat, a cussing
squirrel entice
my old dear dog on watch.

the sun spares no secrets
slow tears slide under my
eyelids, fall
on the daily prayer
of my breath
