Let the Cat Out Of the Bag By Karen Harris Email: fonzie101504 at yahoo dot com (above email address formatted to reduce spam) May 01, 2008 There were two women in my home town who decided one day to do a little light shopping and go out to dinner at a local restaurant. When the two drove up,one of the women noticed a poor deceased cat who had run out of his nine lives right by the curb in front of the place. Well, being a Christian woman and a sensitive soul, she told her companion that she would take one of the shopping bags from the backseat and put the poor dead cat inside. After dinner, she would take the cat out to her place in the country and bury it. Both agreed it was the only thing to do. So, she did. She put the cat in the shopping bag. But then she couldn't decide then what to do with it while they ate dinner. Her friend suggested that they leave in on top of the hood of the car. They would take the window seat in the restuarant so they could keep an eye on it, then after dinner she could continue with her plan. Both agreed, then placed the cat in the bag on top of the hood of the car and went inside to eat. They had not been in the restaurant very long when they noticed another woman from town start to walk by the window. But, she stopped—right in front of their car. They saw the woman look both ways, then pick up the shopping bag from off the hood of the car and walk away with it. Well, the women couldn't believe it. She had stolen their shopping bag with the dead cat inside right in front of them! But, to their horror and amazement, she was now walking into the very same restaurant in which they were seated having dinner! With the shopping bag! They watched in stunned silence as she seated herself and sat the bag next to her at the table. She ordered from the menu and as the waiter turned to place her order the woman reached for the bag and finally looked inside to see what treasure she had found. There was a surprised scream followed by absolute hysterics. All eyes turned to the woman who was now in the throes of what looked like some sort of fit, holding her heart and gasping for air. An EMS was called. Everyone gathered around to see the EMT's place the woman on the gurney, pick up her shopping bag(with the cat still inside)and place it one her chest, then wheel her away to the hostial. They always wondered how she explained the cat in the bag. About the author: I am a 40-year-old community college employee, an English major(seriously), and a poet.
