May and Mother's Flowers
By Barbara Bolton
September 11, 2008
Each year they burst, from the moist black earth, peonies and irises in flower beds. Mother spent hours every evening there, her hands embraced the earth's green budding life. She dug deep to take away the weeds, and slowly flowers grew, nurtured by her hands. With summer's unfurling, blossoms appeared on the bleeding heart bush and the rose bush. She brought fresh cut flowers for our kitchen, paper thin petals from her iris bed.
