- Valerie

Garrison Keillor,
When I listen to you I think of the times I spent growing up in NW Iowa. You and I had similar experiences here on the prarie, the kids and schools, the grouchy old farmers, and the priests and nuns. I may have bumped into you while at the Clay County Fair, or while visiting the Twin Cities. Now I picture the streets of Lake Wobagone and I think we have bumpet into one another there, mabey while eating at the Chatter Box or out on the lake at sunset. We seem to see the same things and I hope to bump into you in real life in Ames this Winter. Or you might find me walking around in Lake Wobegone, I live in the little carpenter gothic story-and-a-half on that short curved street down by the shore line. The one that the old German couple died in after their daughter began to ignore them. It still needs a lot of work since I spend all my time fixing other peoples houses and furniture. I wanted to be a famous artist but I have only managed to dream up a thousand unstarted works. My absent minded wife doesn't sem to care if any thing gets done or not, so I keep on working my rear off for pathetically low wages, since I can't tell what things will cost, and people keep insisting on prices up front. I'm secretly hiding what probably is cancer so that I can get my boys raised and on their own before they cut me up and I can't work any more, and loose the house and business. As long as they leave me my canoe, so I can paddle off into the woods and disapear. You know the guy, see ya, Jim.
- James Schooley
