GK: Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and home to a fabulous summer music program for young people. In today's world, a music career is very different from what it used to be ---- nobody is going to devote his or her life to the violin, for example, (VIOLIN SCALES) or spend thirty years in a jazz trio playing bass (JAZZ BASS). Young musicians will go through many career changes, perhaps starting out as an oboeist (OBOE) and then playing at a theme park in an underwater orchestra (UNDERWATER BRANDENBERG) and then playing bagpipes at birthday parties (BAGPIPE) and perhaps selling nose flutes in a music store (SFX) or going on tour in a Bulgarian Gargling Choir (SFX). You might spend the summer and fall playing Early Renaissance music at Renaissance fairs (SHAWM) dressed in a poofy shirt and doublet and hose and pointy shoes and a cap with bells on it, and on weeknights playing Bach by day (CELLO) and hip-hop at night (BOOMBOX), playing with Pro Musica (CELLO) and then for a few months with Metallica (METAL). Music: it's a great career once you get over the idea of being an artist. Many people have started out composing brilliant music (AVANT GARDE TAPED MUSIC) and wound up playing the tuba. (OOM PA PA) You may be one of them. If your child wants to go into music, that's fine. Just make sure that he or she picks up some computer skills too. (COMPUTER) It's good to dream, but sometimes you have to do what has to be done. (FN: Hello, my name is Pinchas Zukerman and I'll be your server tonight. Let me tell you about our specials ----(FADING) we have a very nice broiled salmon on a bed of basmati rice, and that comes with our Caesar salad…….) Good to be with you at Tanglewood.
