A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor

January 22, 2005
Rhonda Vincent and the Rage were with us for the Halloween show, and we had a fantastic time. So we invited this bluegrass queen back for Saturday's show at the Fitz, and she accepted! Considering St. Paul's recent weather reports, we're calling her the trooper of the month, with a reward she can tell the folks back in Missouri about: Temps above zero. Join us, plus Jim Lauderdale, the Royal Academy of Radio Acting, and more.

The People We Meet at Our Show

Richard Haughian
Richard, Denise,
& the Beckhams
Richard Haughian, the man on the left (from River Falls, Wisconsin, seen here at the January 22 show with his wife Denise and friends Sue and Dick Beckham), claims to be the only liberal car dealer on the planet. We hope he's wrong.

Jan and Taylor
Jan & Taylor
Jan Meck of Houston and her son Taylor Sprenkle of Washington, DC, decided to meet up in Minnesota for a bit of a Prairie Home weekend; when they found out that the Saturday show was sold out, they decided to come anyway for a Friday preview show. Then they hit the rush line on January 22 in the hopes of a double feature — and they got in!

Peter and Sara
Peter & Sara
Peter Albrecht and Sara Mushlitz are like west and east. He lives in Minneapolis and she lives in St. Paul. But when we caught up with the couple at the Fitz on January 22, they managed somehow to be lovely together and even to take a fine photo. Peter figured we were being friendly because of his Wobegonian hat, but people are just friendly here in St. Paul, Peter. Ask Sara. She'll tell you.

The Johnsons
The Johnsons
Jake and Judy Johnson's daughter Janelle was kind enough to get her parents a Christmas gift of tickets to our January 22 show. The parents have been listening for years from their home in St. Cloud, which, says Jake, is not far from the start of the Lake Wobegon bike trail.

77 Love Sonnets by Garrison Keillor

77 Love Sonnets From Garrison Keillor:
“When I was 16, Helen Fleischman assigned me to memorize Shakespeare’s Sonnet No. 29, ‘When in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes, I all alone beweep my outcast state’ for English class, and fifty years later, that poem is still in my head. Algebra got washed away, and geometry and most of biology, but those lines about the redemptive power of love in the face of shame are still here behind my eyeballs, more permanent than my own teeth. The sonnet is a durable good. These 77 of mine include sonnets of praise, some erotic, some lamentations, some street sonnets and a 12-sonnet cycle of months. If anything here offends, I beg your pardon, I come in peace, I depart in gratitude.”

Robin and Linda Williams: Buena Vista

Robin & Linda Williams are among the most popular guest performers of A Prairie Home Companion (they also appeared in the movie, have performed as part of the The Hopeful Gospel Quartet, and made appearances as Marvin & Mavis Smiley). This CD features some of the duo's best harmonies from the show. Among the 12 tracks are familiar fan favorites, including "For Better or Worse", "Visions of Mother and Dad", "Tied Down, Home Free" and the title track. A collection that is muy bueno!
