International Falls lyrics

Listen

They're looking for doctors
In International Falls
Up on the northern border
Where the loon calls.
They don't need a psychiatrist,
They're basically all right
But one who can remove fishhooks
And can treat frostbite.
It's not a luxury resort
With miles of white sand beaches.
It's more known for blizzards,
Woodticks and leeches.
It gets cold in winter so you cannot feel your face
But for the right kind of person, it could be the perfect place.

A surgeon would be nice
And a few specialists.
International Falls is paradise
But disease exists.
It's not a cultural center
Not New York or L.A.
The loons provide the music
And the dogs perform ballet.
There's fishing and hiking
And hunting and canoeing
And a person's never far

From what you're rather be doing.
You can sit at a computer
Writing memos, trading stock
But in fifteen minutes
You can be sitting on your dock.
With your feet in the water and a minnow on the hook
A life that some people only know from a book
In the dead of winter it can feel like outer space
But for the right person it could be the perfect place.

They've had doctors in the Falls
And all well-qualified
But many have retired
To enjoy the countryside.
To go out on Rainy Lake
The 60th largest on the planet.
It's the Garden of Eden,
It's the place where God began it.
A paradise all summer, the water cool and clear,
Fish on the grill and a cooler full of beer.
In September it gets cold so you insulate your house
In October is hunting. Go out and shoot some grouse
In November is deer season. Put on your orange vest.
December is Christmas and the ice-fishing contest.
In January all the Finns jump in the water nude
You got the Walleye Opener in the spring for a fine festive mood.

The seagulls return around St. Patrick's Day,
And the ice should be melted by the first of May.

It isn't Rome or Athens, with their marble halls,
Not much sculpture or fountains or oil paintings on the walls
Not many silk shirts or designer overalls
But for the right person there is no place like the Falls.
