Home on the Plains

Listen

Here in the midwest where nature is blessed
With a beauty so flat and austere,
And though you have flown off to cities unknown,
Your memories bring you back here.

Home, home on the plains
Here on the prairie we lie
Though it's windy and gray, we are doing okay
In our home beneath the great sky

We've found comfort and joy along the St. Croix
The Mississippi and Minnesota
Great rivers that flow through the ice and the snow
All the way to North Dakota

Home, home on the plains
Here on the prairie we lie
Almost wintertime, but we're doing fine
In our home beneath the great sky

Here we were raised in a cold cloudy place
By the rivers where sweet grasses grew
In cities and towns built low to the ground
In the land of Ojibwe and Sioux.

Home, home on the plains
Here on a November day
It's cold in the west, like a witch's chest
But we are doing okay

When it comes my time to leave this world behind
And sail off to regions unknown,
May they lay my remains out on the plains
Out in that sweet prairie home.

Home, home on the plains
Here on a November night
The birds went away, but we are okay
Yes we are doing all right
