Tour Kickoff in Spokane, WA
PHC staffer Kate Swee is on the Radio Romance Tour with Garrison, Fred Newman, Aoife O'Donovan, Sara Watkins, and The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band and will update us periodically from the road.
Our first stop in Spokane was a breath of fresh air (and not just because we spent 22 hours on a bus from St. Paul). We hit some (literal and figurative) bumps along the way; after rolling through the tree-lined mountains of Montana and Idaho, the tech boys repaired a few last minute audio equipment glitches — finishing, as always, victorious and ready for our inaugural performance!
While they worked, the rest of the staff took an evening stroll to absorb the sights, smells, and eventually, the eats of the "Lilac City." We enjoyed peeking over the edges of the many bridges that cross the Upper Spokane Falls, the whooshing of the waters a soothing soundtrack to a setting sun and full stomachs. Walking back through Riverfront Park, it was easy to tell that people couldn't help but to be happy here; with bagpipe tunes in the air from O'Doherty's Pub, children giggling as they soaked themselves in the park's fountains, we felt at peace — and maybe most of all, ready for a good night's sleep.
The next morning, our Host with the Most, sultry singer/songwriter Aoife O'Donovan, sound effects guru Fred Newman, and the ever-rockin' Guy's All-Star Shoe Band met the production team at the INB Performing Arts Center. It was clear that we were all ready to share some Radio Romance with the Spokanites that night, and the laughter and cheers coming from the seats of the former Opera House confirmed that love was indeed in the air. After some jamming, some dramatic improvising, and plenty of lovely duets, it was time to depart. With 26 concerts and 25 cities still ahead of us, there was no time for a rest in Lake Wobegon. On to the next stop: Boise!
