Notes from the Road

Perfection in Grand Rapids

PHC staffer Ella Schovanec is on the Radio Romance Tour with Garrison, Fred Newman, Aoife O'Donovan, Sara Watkins, and The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band and will update us periodically from the road.

We were in Grand Rapids on Monday, and did the show from the city's wonderful sculpture garden. They have modern art pieces from all over the world spread over 132 acres of just gorgeous landscaping. The land was donated this wealthy grocer, Frederik Meijer. He collected sculptures and his wife, Lena, loved to garden, so he always said it was the perfect marriage of their two interests. In their honor, Garrison and Sara Watkins sang "Bramble and the Rose" during the show. Sara also performed this amazing song of hers for the first time on this tour, "You and Me." "I remember the night / I remember the sound / I remember the light / When the moon came around." It was the perfect song for a summer night. Another favorite moment of mine was during Pat Donohue's "Too Gone," when I noticed a bunch of fireflies blinking in the pine trees. It's such a sweet, tender song and as they gently winked on and off, I thought they provided the perfect romantic backdrop. A lovely, lovely show. Sadly, only one more on this Radio Romance tour: Interlochen. The Grand Finale.
