A Prairie Home Companion observes its 40th anniversary with a three-day celebration a stone's throw from the hall where its first live broadcast took place on July 6, 1974, on the campus of Macalester College.

A stellar assortment of guests will join Garrison Keillor, Rich Dworsky and The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band, and the old regulars for a Friday, July 4, concert, "40 Years, 40 Songs," followed by a mass singing of all-American favorites including all of our national anthems.

On Saturday at 5:00 p.m., the same array of musicians, plus the acting company of Fred Newman, Tim Russell, and Sue Scott, will offer a special three-hour national broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion out under the trees.

And on Sunday, a community Sing-Along with Garrison in the Field House.

Plus, all weekend long: a series of smaller concerts around campus, and a Picking & Singing jamboree — all invited to bring an instrument, find friends, make music.

The guests for the weekend include Sam Bush, Iris DeMent, Stuart Duncan, Howard Levy, Heather Masse, Old Crow Medicine Show, Los Texmaniacs, Gillian Welch, Robin and Linda Williams, and the Old Regulars, Bob Douglas, Adam Granger, Prudence Johnson, Dean Magraw, Dan Newton, Peter Ostroushko, Joe Savage, Jearlyn and Jevetta Steele, Vern Sutton, Butch Thompson, and Pop Wagner.
